DG, Presidents & Rotarians... Being the Race Coordinator for The Great Cardboard Boat Regatta, I get to know most of the groups who enter the race. Each year, after Rotary River Rally I receive numerous letters from people thanking us for the wonderful challenge we present to them. I thought your club would enjoy experiencing the gratitude after all the hard work is done. Our efforts are not in vain. In fact, our educational, fun event not only helps us raise money to help others but the opportunity to mix pleasure with learning is really appreciated by the teaching community.... Here are a few of the letters I received this year.

The Great Cardboard Boat Regatta is a great team building exercise as well as a way to encourage creative problem solving. We have used the occasion to focus collaborative energy on two 3D design Units in our Core program in the School of Art at Arizona State University. Students learn methods of scaling from a model to a full size product. They also learn practical approaches to structural design and how to work as part of a "design team." The students do a terrific job of brainstorming a full array of alternative designs, but the proof of the exercise is in their ability to work collaboratively to generate a practical design that carries the crew across the finish line.

I heartily recommend the event to all groups interested in team building, brainstorming, creative problem solving, and experiential learning.

This was the first year for Ishikawa Elementary school (Mesa Public Schools) to participate in the Great Cardboard Boat Regatta. Our experience was very fulfilling. We were able to design, create, and race a cardboard boat that would eventually win the youth division race. Each student was able to experience moments of pride and accomplishment as a direct result of their hard work and dedication to an eight week project.

Our boat club was started to give the students the opportunity to learn about how to build a boat utilizing their science and math skills. The students had to calculate and measure each piece of the boat and construct each phase through out the entire process. The students were able to place ownership on the boat because they were the ones to build it. Without prior experience, the idea of making a cardboard boat that would float was a little strange so our expectations were to make a durable and waterproof boat. Once our boat was placed in the water on race day, the students were thrilled that it not only floated but they were able to race it efficiently! The confidence level in each student from the start of the day until the conclusion was an amazing transformation. They realized the importance of teamwork, the value of hard work/dedication, and the excitement of victory.

The feedback from the community has been overwhelming. Our students had the opportunity to be on television, in two newspapers articles, and were individually recognized with trophies at our awards ceremony. The teachers and parents comment that our participation has made them proud of Ishikawa. Our decision to participate was one of the best things to happen to our school this year. We were grateful for our results but also proud of giving back to the community and helping out the Thomas J. Pappas school. Our decision to use a corporate sponsor was to help defray our costs but most importantly, it was meant to help others.

I believe that the Great Cardboard Boat Regatta gives all students the opportunity to learn and grow in a fun environment.

It was great!

"My Spanish speaking students and my English speaking students all found ways to communicate about our project every day after school and created new friendships that never would have been fostered otherwise"

I do plan to do it again next year and I will be challenging other schools in my district, so please mail your information to every school in the Pendergast district as I will be making personal challenges to them.

Thanks again!
